New registrations of electric and hybrid cars are rising rapidly in Germany. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), a total of 30,101 electric cars were newly registered in March of this year alone, which represents an increase of 191.4 percent compared to the same month last year. In addition, there were 81,220 newly registered hybrid cars (+ 182.7 percent).
In the first quarter of 2021, newly registered electric cars reach 64,694 vehicles, an increase of 149.1 percent in contrast to the previous year. The market share of electric cars thus increases from 3.7 percent to 9.8 percent within one year. Plug-in hybrids also recorded a huge increase of 195.4 percent in the first quarter. Among the electric providers, Daimler's Smart subsidiary scored particularly well with a year-on-year increase of 313.8 percent, followed by Tesla (+ 83.2 percent).
